A screech owl in the new box
A screech owl has been hanging out in the new owl box for a couple of weeks. Our daughter told us about it while we were gone, and I’ve been on the lookout since coming home. Yesterday I finally saw it.
I was rumbling the trash and recycling bins up the driveway around 6 pm and happened to look up. Despite the commotion, there it was! Just calmly sitting in the doorway, watching me.
I went inside to get my camera, and it drowsily stayed put, its half-open eyes watching me as I took a bunch of pictures.
I believe it’s too early for nesting season for these beautiful little owls. That happens in winter. But I hope it’s checking out the box in preparation and will choose it to raise a family when the time is right.

Congrats on your new tenant!
Such a wonderful visitor!
That’s really exciting!
That is so cool
Lucky you! Your house opening is much bigger than mine, so maybe that’s why I can’t seem to have one…..
Awwww, cutie! I just love owls.
Fingers crossed, Pam! Screech owls are just so darned cute, aren’t they?
Wow! What a gorgeous creature. Its camouflage is spectacular. I hope it sticks around.
I’m so jealous! Let’s hope a new family will be on its way in the coming months and that you will have some wonderful photos of it to share!
What fun. I missed seeing your posts about the owl adventures. May it have a successful breeding time.
What an honor to have an owl choose your garden. Can you see how green my skin has become?
Nancy, if you don’t already have an owl box in your big red oak, I believe you have a perfect spot for one.
Hmm, maybe I need to build an owl box! It is super cute. I’ve heard three different types of owl around here, including screech owls, but never seen one. Lucky you!
My husband built our first screech owl box, and what a great gift it turned out to be. We had owl families for years in that one. He built it from specs on the Audubon website.
I hope your cute owl comes back when it’s time to nest. Did you buy this owl house? Very nice!
Yes, we bought it from Lone Star Woodcraft.
