New succulent nursery by OG Agave spikes up Lakeway

May 16, 2022

Austin gardener Matt Shreves is crazy about cacti and succulents. His own gorgeous garden is a spiky showcase of agaves, barrel cactus, yuccas, Argentine saguaro and other columnar cacti, as well as small container-sized succulents. I’ve featured his garden twice — here and here — so check out those posts to see Texas-style succulent goodness.

Matt’s been selling rare and rad cacti/succulents for a while through his insanely popular Instagram account, og_agave (with 47K followers!). But recently he and his wife set up a physical nursery in Lakeway, 25 miles west of Austin. I drove out to OG Agave’s Plant Paradise a couple of weeks ago to take a look and do a little shopping.

Welcome to OG’s Plant Crib proclaims a Gilligan’s Island-style sign on the fence. Walking through the gate I admired big — and I mean BIG — golden barrel cactus, agaves, and other landscape-size plants for sale. The big greenhouse in the background, though, is where the creative stuff is.

Inside, Matt and Mrs. OG_Agave showcase oodles of succulents potted up in stylish and unusual containers.

Monkey’s tail (Cleistocactus colademononis) makes a cool hairdo for this head planter — and convinced me that I needed to bring home a little monkey’s tail of my own.

There are lots of interesting plants and pots at all price points.

Check out this crazy lizard-bursting-out-Alien-style pot.

You can buy succulents already potted up into containers, or choose individual plants and pots to make your own combos.

Matt pointed out this crested San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi fcristata), a striking plant.

He has a few of these conversation starters.

And look at these oddballs!

Fun plants for spike lovers, collectors, and gardeners who want something no one else has.

More monkey’s tail, and this one’s wearing a hat.

A sunset photo of Matt’s home garden makes a vivid backdrop for a turquoise succulent planter.

In the front corners of the greenhouse, triangular raised beds display fantastical miniature display gardens.

Want more OG Agave? Well, who wouldn’t?

OG Agave’s Plant Paradise is located at 2101 N RR 620, Austin, TX 78734. This area is somewhat newly developed, and both Google Maps and Apple Maps proved wonky for me. If you find yourself at a vacant lot along RM 620, just keep going and look for the giant inflatable cactus and yellow sign advertising Gigantic Succulents. That’s where OG_Agave’s nursery awaits.

OG_Agave is closed on Mondays but otherwise open from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays, and 10 am to 4 pm on weekends. Check out their Facebook page for more info.
