Potted characters at East Austin Succulents

March 26, 2021

Weird and wonderful creatures with plants for brains — sound like anybody you know? — greeted me at East Austin Succulents last week. They were silent types with big personalities. This ghostly guy with ghost plant (Graptopetalum paraguayense) sprouting from his forehead may have been my favorite.

This one’s spookier, with a bit of zombie in his blank-eyed, open-mouthed expression. He’s wonderfully planted though.

Want a full-body planter? They have those too. Suspended in a line, they look like streakers running a 5K — doing their part to keep Austin weird!

A devilish but placid fellow sports a cactus atop his head. I wonder what you’d find if you opened the door to his heart?

East Austin Succulents inspires with their one-of-a-kind cactus and succulent planters, and they’ll plant up anything, even Radio Flyer wagons. This miniature rock garden is truly beautiful.

And you can’t miss their giant moon cactus sculpture as you walk in. The unexpected is what this place is all about.

Love these (and your descriptions). Your post also made me wish I didn’t give away my wagon years ago.

I bet you have something else lying around that would make a creative and fun succulent/cactus planter though. They make them out of anything. It’s pretty fun to see what they come up with.

Wow, those are SO cool. I’m going to send a link to this post to my daughter. She will love it.

What an interesting collection of planters. I think I really like the full bodies. They all have different expressions. I can’t decide if they are too weird or too hilarious. ha… I will go with hilarious. They almost look like they are flying. I didn’t notice the wires holding them up at first. I must need my glasses adjusted!

ok well the giant moon cactus. I’m on board ! These are not your average head planters I must say. How great to have aplace like this in close proximity !

We’re very lucky to have a number of unique independent nurseries in Austin, including EAS.

Very weird but I like them. “Weird” in the garden could be considered a first cousin to “Whimsy” in the garden which keeps those family garden parties interesting 😉 The running full body planters reminded me of Dobby the house elf from the Harry Potter movies.

I’m beginning to understand the merit of “Keep Austin Weird”

These are great! I’m always on the lookout for face planters but I never seen cool ones like these. My favorite is the zombie (2nd photo).

Imagine having that one on a shelf in the garden, with uplighting at night. Spooky!
