A blessing of rain and toads

July 25, 2008

Hurricane Dolly’s rainy reach just barely extended to central Texas, but we’ll take what we can get after months and months of drought and triple digits. A light sprinkle this morning had me making good on a promise to my children that they’d see me dancing in the rain if we ever saw any again. Making good on my word, I went out in my bathrobe to do a celebratory rain dance on the lawnette.
That sprinkling didn’t really amount to much, welcome as it was. But mid-afternoon we had a real downpour, and I watched with glee from inside as the rain barrel filled and then overflowed into the dry stream and from there into the rain garden. Ah, blessed rain.
We ended up with just over half an inch. I’d rather have had 3 inches, but at this point, a half inch is good. Driving home this evening after seeing Mamma Mia, I dodged so many toads in the road that it seemed as if they were out celebrating too.

We got a real downpour down in south Austin as well. I was taking pictures from the back deck as the water overflowed the gutters. 🙂

Pam, I find it hard to imagine being this pleased to see rain! Very occasionally we get a dry spell but nothing like the heat you get. This summer we haven’t gone a week without rain. I am so glad it rained for you and I enjoyed my image of your rain dance!
    Best wishes Sylvia (England)

  3. Nice pictures, but I thought we’d get a picture of you dancing on your lawnette! I feel like ‘congrats on the rain’ are in order. Does Hallmark make a card for events like this?

I can relate to your enthusiasm over getting a little rain! You are right. 1/2 inch is better than nothing, and I know you could use it from a newscast I saw tonight referring to Hurricane Dolly and rain. They mentioned about your ongoing drought.

Yes, I can see that bathrobe twirling in the sprinkles. Good for your garden and good for you.
It seems when our gardens need rain so bad when it does rain it makes our heart swell with gladness.

  6. Its amazing how kids forget what ever you ask them to do but allways remember promises you make especially those which involve you making a fool of yourself!

  7. So happy for you, Pam. Could you send the next tropical storm our way? LOL. We’re just a little north and west. I bet the worms were celebrating with the toads and the fairies too.~~Dee

I’m so glad you finally got some rain! It must have been welcome relief. I’m sure your garden is revelling in it.

Pam, I’m happy for Austin … I know how much y’all needed that rain. I don’t know if the toads are out on the streets here but a couple of them have found my garden. They’ve been keeping us awakewith their nocturnal conversations!

  10. Gail says:

Glad you received rain and wish we had a photo of your celebratory dance.
We are getting much needed rain…the rain barrel is over flowing into the downspout…maybe a rain garden is needed after all, certainly more rain barrels! No toads but lots of cicadas. They are busting out this month! gail

Congrats to your rain!!! Now if only Dolly could come over here and visit us with a half inch of the wet stuff!!! We are burning up here. I am so sick of the smoke. I haven’t seen the blue sky in weeks. )-: I would gladly do a rain dance too if it came here.

  12. ELK says:

not a drop…I was so hopeful! glad you got a few!

  13. Bonnie says:

I think we must have been listening to the same dance soundtrack!

I read your title quickly and got a mental picture of that scene in Magnolia where it’s rainin’ toads (frogs I think)…sorry! But Oh! How you make remember longing for rain in the Southwest. We had finally had sun today, and it felt great. I love the 2 wiggly flowers you posted, too 🙂

Thanks for your good thoughts, everyone. And may those of you who also need rain get some steady downpours soon. I want to hear about everyone who’s dancing in the rain. —Pam

  16. We got about .6 inch too, Pam…Tom Spencer said there was almost an inch of rain at his house, John Dromgoole’s area had 1 and 3/4, and some parts of South Austin had 2 and 1/2.
Thanks for the link to the IPM blog. I saw that episode of Central Texas Gardener, and thought Wizzie was as cute as a ladybug.
We just got home from Mamma Mia.

Lucky lucky Austin – we are so parched here I can’t even explain it. Worse, we have these teasing clouds that stay all billowy and threatening on the horizon, never coming near and dropping the tiniest bit of water. Sigh. Dry dry dry.
And YOU! Teasing me too … with that picture of the beautiful Passiflora and no caption! Is it ‘Incense’? Gorgeous, as per usual!

Yes! It is ‘Incense,’ Germi. I’ve wanted one for so long, and I’d bought another incorrectly labeled as ‘Incense,’ but this one came through for me. I have a few more pics to post soon. And I’m doing a little rain dance for you. —Pam
