Picture This photo contest entry: Awakening

March 10, 2010

Over at Gardening Gone Wild, the theme for this month’s Picture This photo contest, judged by photographer Saxon Holt, is Awakening.
We don’t get much of a winter here in Austin. But the garden still looks a little drab after our hard freezes this year. Enter gopher plant (Euphorbia rigida), my bellwether for spring. Gorgeous chartreuse bracts have formed, and yellow flower buds will be opening soon to welcome spring.
To know when spring is on our doorstep in Austin, forget about groundhogs and their shadows. Rely on gophers!

My gardens are still sleeping under a blanket of snow. I’ll have to think about entering a moss photo. They could hardly wait for the snow to melt before sending up spore capsules. Not exactly a garden shot but it’s the only green growing right now.

I just “discovered” Euphorbias last summer and bought several kinds. I don’t think any of mine have recovered yet though. I’ll have to check when I go out. Yours is looking very springlike:)

  4. Good luck my friend.~~Dee

Beautiful photo Pam. Of course I don’t think you could take a poor one.

  6. Beautiful monochromatic shot, but what a bad name for that plant. Why is it called gopher plant? It doesn’t look like gopher.
I have no idea where the name came from, MMD. Another reader suggested that it may have gopher-repelling qualities. But I have no way to test that, not being troubled by gophers. 🙂 —Pam

That’s a great shot, Pam. Looks like you have a good chance of winning.

    Pam,
What a lovely shade of green. I’ve never seen a gopher plant before but I can see how it’s bright color would herald the arrival of spring for you. Best of luck with the photo contest.

  9. Looks like a great awakening to me. Now I’m considering it for the cat cove. Probably the only spot in my garden that it would go fer.

  10. So beautiful. I just love the chartreuse color of the flowers.

We were getting a little dryer & behold it came a gully washer again today. Needless to say you can’t walk in the yard. I need some water skis. lol

Funny that you mention gopher plant – just saw the 1st few Euphorbia myrsinites starting to flower riding up to the foothills trails – so there is hope spring is on it’s way!
