Hunter’s Moon

October 25, 2007

Driving home at sunset, I saw the biggest full moon I’ve seen in a long while rising over a house on a hill. It looked immense and weighty, as if it could crush the house. Here it is, moon fans—the biggest full moon of the year. It’s about 30,000 miles closer to the earth, says Earth & Sky, than the smallest full moon of 2007, back in April.

So go out and howl at the moon tonight. It’s worth a serenade.

Update: October 26, 7:45 am. This morning the moon was still as big as a house, now tinged with ivory, sinking behind the western hills.

  1. Wow – lucky you to catch the rise – sounds like it would have been hard to miss! I think I can blame cloud cover (or domestic distraction) for missing it here but I did notice the moon shadows last night and I’ve got the set on now – thanks for making me look for it!

It was impossible to miss here, Kris. No clouds, just the big ole moon. —Pam

Wow! Great shot of the moon! I’m not usually out at night so always forget to look at the moon.

If I miss seeing the full moon rising, I usually notice it late at night, when it shines into my bedroom. It always reminds me of the children’s story, Goodnight, Moon. —Pam

And it is so bright! I went for a walk after dark last night and I kept thinking there was someone shining a searchlight through the woods.

I’ll bet it seemed really bright where you live, Bill, with few streetlights or house lights to dilute its glow. —Pam
