My 15 minutes on "Central Texas Gardener"

April 17, 2008

I can’t believe I’m telling you this when I haven’t seen how it turned out, but my garden and I are scheduled to appear on PBS’s “Central Texas Gardener” this weekend. Last October the producer and crew came out to tape an interview and garden footage. I have vague memories of babbling on about garden blogging, about the importance of hardscaping and seating in the garden, and about the genesis of Green Hall. God knows what I said exactly, but I’m sure some inanities will be immortalized on tape and eventually on YouTube. That’s right, the interview portion of the show will be posted to YouTube after it airs, giving you out-of-staters a chance to hear me ramble on as well.
I believe the theme of the show will be planting in spring for fall appeal. You’ll see a few Halloween decorations in the background, but they told me not to worry about that. It’ll reinforce the fall theme, they said. Hey, I was just following directions.
“Central Texas Gardener” airs on KLRU here in Austin. I was surprised to learn that it also airs in San Antonio, Waco, Killeen, and College Station, Texas, and even in Portales, New Mexico.
Here are the airdates for all PBS stations:
KLRU: Saturday, April 19, Noon & 4 p.m. Repeats Sunday, April 20, 8 a.m.
KLRU 2: Saturday, April 19, 9 p.m. Repeats Wednesday, April 23, 10 a.m.
KLRN (San Antonio): Saturday, April 19, 11 a.m.
KWBU (Waco): Saturday, April 19, 3:30 p.m. Repeats Thursday, April 24, 2 p.m.
KNCT (Killeen): Saturday, April 19, 1:30 p.m. Repeats Sunday, April 20, 5:30 p.m.
KAMU (College Station): Saturday, April 19, 3 p.m. Repeats Thursday, April 24, 10:30 p.m.
KENW (Portales, NM): Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m
If we count repeat airings, do I get more than 15 minutes?
Update: The show aired today, and my segment is up on YouTube.

More congrats to you Pam, you are indeed famous in many ways. Be sure and post the you tube link when you have us for those non Texans to see your pretty face.

  2. Cindy says:

Very cool, Pam! Wish our PBS station aired CTG but I’ll wait (im)patiently for YouTube. Fame doesn’t come without burdens: beware of the garden paparazzi! 😉 “It’s her! Pam, Pam, over here!” “Pam, can we get a shot of you with your Felcos?” “Pam, is it true that you hate petunias?”

  3. Lisa at Greenbow says:

I hope it turns out as you wish it to Pam. Good luck. I hope I can find it on utube. Maybe
it will even be on our pbs station. I will watch for it.

  4. Layanee says:

  5. Nancy says:

Oh, I wish the PBS channel in Houston would carry that, I’d love to see it aired. I’d like to hear about Green Hall, as the name made me smile at the pun!

  6. Brenda Kula says:

Hey, good for you! And your yard! Loved the shed. Clicked on your link. Do you know I use to live one mile from Gruene Hall? Isn’t that funny? You did a magnificent job. Your yard, just from the photos, evokes tranquility for me. Love to see it every time you post.
    Brenda

  14. We midwesteners are going to need links to those YouTubes just as soon as they are online. This is exciting, and even more so since I’ve been in your garden! Congrats!

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll be sure to set my DVR so I don’t miss it! They need to be filming in your garden NOW – I’m amazed at all you have blooming at one time.

    Annie

  22. Jean says:

Pam – I just saw the show and I agree with Annie, it was wonderful. Pictures on the web are great but this really put me “in” your garden. Great job.
    Jean

  23. Vive says:

Hooray, Pam! I watched it this afternoon. (Raced inside with fishy Lady Bug fertilizer all over my hands…) It was great!
You were so smart and articulate, and the garden looked terrific! Very exciting.
(The rest of the show just makes me want to buy stuff. Forsythia sage tops the list…)

  24. Pam/Digging says:

Thanks for the encouraging words, everyone. I had a little trepidation about finally seeing the show, but I’m pleased with how it turned out.
Annie, Jean, and Vive, thank you so much for the kind words about my segment. Vive, I’m with you—I want to rush right out and buy a couple of the plants they featured in the rest of the show. —Pam

  25. Jenny Stocker says:

Pam. I’m so glad you stopped to talk with me at the garden tour. I rushed inside and set the VCR to record the later edition of the show and just finished watching. You sounded so eloquent and I loved all the film footage of the garden. Linda always does a fabulous job but she couldn’t do it without your excellent design and planting. It has become quite a habit to sit down with the computer in the evening and catch up on your blog and links to all the others. You and the bloggers have enriched my gardening life.
    Jenny
Hey, Jenny, thanks for commenting! Your garden is the toast of the Austin blogosphere right now. Go to Zanthan Gardens and Vert for more admiring posts about your garden. Thanks for opening it up to everyone on Saturday.
Thanks also for your kind words about my CTG appearance. And watch out—reading garden blogs can be highly addictive. But very fun. Let us know if you ever decide to get yours going again. —Pam

  26. Jenny Stocker says:

I think I am already addicted. I brought the lap top into the bedroom this morning. The first time ever!
Yep, that’s how it happens. Well, there are worse addictions, so don’t be too worried. 😉 —Pam
