Read my article in Country Gardens about using a painter’s tricks in garden design
Stacked pumpkins, grapevine wreaths, and overflowing buckets of mums brighten the Fall 2018 issue of Country Gardens magazine — and I am so ready for that cooler, brighter season to arrive. Even if you’re not, I hope you’ll enjoy reading an article I produced and wrote for the magazine this month.
“An Artist’s Touch” shares the design advice of San Antonio gardener Eva Templeton, one of the magazine’s 20th Annual Garden Awards winners. A classically trained artist, 96-year-old Eva employs techniques of perspective, line, symmetry, and focal points to add greater depth and interest to her small suburban yard.
Eva was a delight to interview, and her garden may inspire you to rethink your own garden’s layout. You’ll find the article on pages 62-67.

Yes, I read it and I want to be just like Eva when I grow up.
Me too, Lisa.
I do, too.
96! I’ll definitely look for the magazine.
She’s an impressive lady with strong opinions — and a strong body!
Looks like a great article. I love the way you write and your photos are always superb. I am so ready for fall!
Aw, thank you, Laurin. That’s such a lovely compliment. And yes, come on, Fall!
I have read the article and looked at the pics many times. I just moved into my forever home and want to duplicate this idea in my yard beginning this year. Beginning at 68 I had better get a move on !!! Lol. Thanks
I know that Eva, the homeowner, would be thrilled to hear that her garden and her design tips are inspiring you! Happy digging, Kathryn.
I don’t always read all the articles in a magazine, but when I saw the garden shed pic in my first issue, I just had to know more! And then I saw that it was in Texas, and that Eva is a retired art teacher! My daughter is an art teacher in Houston (rebeccadegroot.com). I so wish that they could meet!
Nice article, and, Eva (if you read this), I hope that you have many, many more years in your beautiful paradise!
