Last gasp of summer?

September 27, 2009

The heat returned like a heavy, damp comforter this weekend—which was just what I wanted. My mom and my sister and her partner came into town for a visit, and we planned to spend the weekend sitting around the pool, so cool and rainy fall weather was actually unwelcome for once. Brrr! The water was as chilly as Barton Springs Pool (literally), but we jumped in and swam anyway, played a few games of H.O.R.S.E. with the poolside basketball goal, had some raft wars, and generally behaved like silly kids. It was a blast.

My mom and I spent Friday morning strolling around Mueller, a planned development on the site of the old airport in east-central Austin. I’d seen several pics of its greenbelts, prairies, and parks on other local blogs and wanted to see for myself. These three pictures are all from our visit there, and I’ll give a longer tour of Mueller tomorrow.

Until then, Mom’s still here, and we’re going to sit around and play Aggravation this afternoon and watch Ken Burns’ The National Parks on PBS this evening. I hope you have an enjoyable, relaxing Sunday afternoon too.

I’m glad you are having fun with your mum. She must be a sport to go in those chilly waters. As soon as the nights cool off that water temperature plummets. I doubt I’ll be getting in there again this year although after working outside this morning I could have done with cooling off. The day heated up really quickly. Look forward to your post on Mueller. It looks delightful over there.
Mom was the only one who didn’t get in, actually. But she is a good sport about things. 😉 —Pam

There is nothing better than “letting your hair down”, and being silly. Have a wonderful visit. Can’t wait to see your pics of the Mueller Development.

  4. Hi Pam. Yes, it was very warm in Houston today too. I tried to do a few chores outside, but found myself coming in to cool off a few times. Lovely photos, especially that yellow flower. What is it?
It was a sunflower, I believe, growing wild alongside the trail. —Pam

It sounds like you made the most of this weekend. I love the photos of the prairie.

  6. Fairly warm here, too. I think I’ll take the cooler weather, though. Next week I hope to lay a flagstone patio, so temperatures in the 60s would be nice…
Glad you’ve had a nice visit with your loved ones.

It was a little sticky here again today – I worked outside in the morning but retreated to prep dinner early as an excuse to be inside! Glad you had such a good weekend with all your company – sounds like a blast. Looking forward to the Mueller pics – I’ve heard great things about it but haven’t gone over there to see for myself yet.

I am so glad you were able to entertain around the pool Pam. So many of my pool owning friends here haven’t had that pleasure this summer. We have had such a cool summer. It was 50F this morning. I would say our pool days are over this year. Your photos are so crisp. I love seeing the detail on the Rudi.
