Beautiful autumn days

October 27, 2007

Until the clock strikes midnight and turns the gilt coach of these beautiful, sunny, cool days into a bumpy, lumpy, old pumpkin, I’ll be out in the garden every day. And get this—I’m just sitting in it, not working. Yes, it’s true. Those garden seats are actually getting some use.

Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida )

Unknown muhly grass—and yard art
Wherever you garden, I hope you’re out in it, enjoying autumn’s pleasures too.

Just sitting? Now there’s a good idea, except the frost is coming, the frost is coming. So much to do here in the midwest. I’ll have to wait and then sit by the fire indoors dreaming about next year’s garden!

Not here, not yet. I think I’ll sit for a few more days and then get back to work. I hope you beat the frost, Carol. —Pam

I think that is most wonderful pumpkin I have ever seen! It would be perfect for Cinderella’s coach… I also love your garden art. Someday I may just have a bottle tree like yours! This weather is just drop dead wonderful, and I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! Chris
The weather is still unbeatable. The thought of days like these is what gets me through Austin’s summer. I hope you do grow a bottle tree, Chris. If I could only send you some seeds from mine. —Pam

Your blue pots with the Mexican mint marigolds are eye-catching! I like your rooster too and what a cute pumpkin you have there
Thanks, Kate. I enjoy yard art, as you can see. —Pam

It was a glorious day here to sit outside. We have a freeze warning tonight, that is hard to believe after the warm, sunny day today. I love your pumpkin, I think you win the pretty pumpkin prize.
Did you get a freeze, Robin? It is always hard to believe in the warnings when they come on the heels of beautiful, warm days. —Pam

Yep, I was outside a lot today enjoying this gorgeous autumn day. I love your blue pots. I have a few blue pots too.
One of my favorite colors in the garden. Did you grow your pumpkin? I want to try that next summer. Not going for a huge pumpkin but I would like a few to offer at a pumpkin carving party I keep thinking about having.
Hi, Lisa. I don’t know how I ended up with so much blue in my garden because it isn’t one of the colors I usually gravitate toward. But these pots and the idea of a blue bottle tree grabbed me, so there ya go. No, I didn’t grow that pumpkin. It’s a grocery store (HEB) special, but a pretty one. —Pam

That’s a handsome looking colorful pumpkin. Is it good to eat? For some reason most people here use pumpkins only for decoration and not for eating. We love squash but the selection isn’t great at the local farmer’s market and I don’t want to grow them because they take up too much space. Our favorites are the butternut and Japanese kabocha. Both are sweet and have a dry consistency. The butternut is easy to find but I’ve seen relatively few kabocha.
Ki, it’s almost pumpkin-pie time, isn’t it? I don’t think these so-called “Cinderella” pumpkins sold by the grocery stores are good eating, but the little pie pumpkins are. My kids like to decorate those by painting them. I love butternut squash too, but I’m not familiar with the other. —Pam

Lovely pumpkin, and the Mexican Mint Marigolds are so sunny. Mine are happy, too. It was a good day to SIT a bit in the garden. We don’t do enough “enjoying” of our gardens because we’re hard at work in them. I heard we might have a freeze coming up, and I SWEAR I am not going to run around like a madwoman trying to cover and save things because I know it might be a month before another freeze and I can’t bear for things to be gone so soon! Hold me to those words, will you??!!
Wow, I hadn’t heard the rumor of frost here in Austin. I did hear the weatherman say that today or tomorrow is the record date for the earliest recorded frost in Austin. I would be flabbergasted to hear a frost warning for this time of year though. Our average first frost date (at the centrally located former Mueller Airport) is December 2. —Pam

  8. I think that’s the prettiest pumpkin picture I’ve seen so far! Lovely. And I’m enjoying the break of sunshine we’re having up here in rainy ole’ Oregon. But sitting? No. Sigh… ~A 🙂
No, I guess you aren’t doing much sitting while you’re working on your new house. I hope you steal a few restful moments when the sun pops out, Angela. —Pam

  9. Robin says:

Pam, we did get the freeze as predicted and it finished off my zinnias as I suspected it would.

You still have title to the prettiest bottle tree ever. Love the yard art and your stylish blue pots.
Thanks a bunch, Lost Roses! —Pam
