Mellow and screaming yellows
August 20, 2009
First, the screaming yellow of Rudbeckia hirta ‘Irish Eyes’. My son sowed these from seed at the end of March. They’ve been blooming for several weeks.
While these are nice for a change, I still prefer the classic (not boring, no siree) black-eyed Susan from my old garden, Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm.’ I prefer a dark eye in contrast to the yellow petals. I’ll have to get some for the new garden.
On the mellow side of yellow, just floating around, are the ‘Helvola’ water lilies.
They catch the light of the setting sun so beautifully.
The outer petals are a pale lemon-yellow. But the inside is downright buttery.

They call me mellow yellow, that right… What ever you call them I would say they are beautiful.
The water lilies look delicious! You can have my rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’! That’s the only perennial in my deer resistant garden that I have to spray with bunny repellent. I need to pull them out and sow marigold seeds in their place next year. I’ve got the deer figured out, but the rabbits….

I love the little dimples in the rudbekia cones and the last photo of the water lily is beautiful, like a wedding cake.
You know I love yellow~~screaming or mellow and it looks good in your garden. The water lilies are beautiful…a very gentle yellow. I will gladly send you all the rudbeckia seeds you can use…plants, even! Pam, is it fun having your children involved with gardening? My son was not interested; although, he very much is now. gail
The lilies are daffodil-coloured — so pretty! I love yellow in the garden — it’s such a cheery colour.
What gorgeous photography. The waterlilies are awesome.
If only I’d known, I would have brought some Rudbeckia to you in Tulsa. But, then again, you would have had to tote them home. Surely Annie has some to send you. Doesn’t she grow them. I have ‘Irish Eyes’ this year, and it’s an enjoyable, but very different Susan.~~Dee
Pam,
That little burst of light under the flower in the 4th picture really sets it off. Of course that last lily photo is just gorgeous too.
I have to agre with you I like the regular old Blackeyed Susan compared to the newer varieties. The one you posted looks pretty though.
