Hootin’ Annie the screech owl
Making dinner last night, we glanced out the kitchen window and saw our little screech owl perched in the doorway of the owl box, just chillin’. I grabbed my camera and crept out on the deck to get a few pictures. When she didn’t stir, I eased down the stairs and meandered slowly to the patio, where I stood under her box for a few close-ups. She cracked her peepers open a notch but was otherwise undisturbed by my presence.
Isn’t she fierce and comical, all at the same time?

She’s cute and seems to like the place so you’ll have a screech owl family in residence soon. How fun that she’s not startled by your camera.
She’s really quite comfortable with us humans around. —Pam
How exciting to have such a talon-ted (sorry!) visitor. She looks sleepy. I can’t believe you could get that close. Their feathers are beautiful and so thick.
Good one, Jeanette! —Pam
She is absolutely fierce and comical both. Those squinty eyes, and then the claws sticking out. How lucky that she wasn’t bothered by your closeness.
She looks like a tribble. —Pam
What a treat to be able to watch the comings and goings of these beautiful creatures. I am surprised you haven’t bought one of those little camera dealies that you can put into nest boxes and watch them inside on your computer. Now that would be fun. 🙂
I know, that would be fun! —Pam
Well, hello gorgeous! Do you suppose Annie has used your nesting box previously? Maybe she is already accustomed to the occasional presence of paparazzi as the price that must be paid for such a high end address.
I can never tell if it’s the same owl, Deb. I’ve examined photos from year to year, but I guess I just don’t have my owl eyes on. Some years, though, the resident owl is skittish and other years not. So maybe the owls are different every year. Whooo knows? —Pam
She’s fabulous! What a great houseguest. Hope you see signs of little ones soon.
If we’re lucky, we’ll see them in early May poking their little faces out. —Pam
She’s focused on the task at hand! What a great opportunity to see her close up.
I’m loving this owl, Kris. So friendly. Well, at least not hostile. —Pam
How fierce and cute at the same time! I want to squeeze her!
Oh, I imagine she would seem a lot less cuddly up close. 🙂 —Pam
Love these! Wonderful photos of a great neighbor.
I’m thrilled to be her neighbor, Luisa. —Pam
Those talons and beak certainly look fierce. But clearly she isn’t interested in you. Just your box.
She’s very laid-back. I’m really liking this owl. Her mate was in the tree behind the back fence all day today. —Pam
Great photos!
Have a wonderful week-end!
Lea
Thanks, Lea, you too! —Pam
She’s amazing! We need an owl in our garden to take care of some of those pesky squirrels and other rodents. I’m going to find an owl box! Careful about posting pictures of your hooters; a girl could get a reputation! (It’s always the quiet ones…:)
You too, when you get some worth showing! 😉 Do get an owl box. They are so much fun to watch. —Pam
