Drive-By Gardens: A red-carpet welcome of oxblood lilies

October 04, 2013

I spotted this cheery welcome in central Austin today: oodles of oxblood lilies (Rhodophiala bifida), a fall-blooming, naturalizing bulb for central Texas, in bloom against a white picket fence.

Happy Friday, y’all!

How pretty that is and worth waiting for each year.

  8. That is a nice look. Too bad it only lasts for a few days. The first time I saw oxblood lilies was when I was going to UNT in Denton. I was driving through an old neighborhood and spotted a house where the entire lawn had these red flowers popping up through the grass. I have wanted to go back for a photo, but I was lost at the time and have no idea where I was.

True, this is not a look you can build an all-year design around. But it’s certainly effective for a weeklong traffic-stopping moment in early fall. I’d love to have seen that oxblood-lily-studded lawn you happened upon. —Pam

That’s why you plant multiple bulbs to fill out the season! Plus, the peony season in my old home lasted only a week, but what a week!
