Morning after the rain

March 12, 2007

‘Amethyst’ iris interior. The outer petals appear to be missing, with this beautiful result.
The rain dancing paid off. All night rain fell, accompanied by lightning and thunder, and this morning the rain gauge showed that we received 2 1/4 inches! More rain is forecast for tonight and tomorrow night. I know thunderstorms aren’t what the South by Southwest visitors want to see, but it is very much needed rain. I hope the clouds were as generous over the Highland lakes and Hill Country because the lakes need refilling and the emerging bluebonnets need a long drink.

Dark-pink flowers cluster along the branches of the Texas redbud

The redbud is in full bloom

Another view

The grape hyacinths along the path are thick and full with miniature blue spires.

‘Amethyst’ irises ring the birdbath in the front garden.

  1. Those Irises are very lovely. It’s a pity that they flower only for a short time. Luckily Vincent van Gogh painted lovely portraits of them. Every time I see Irises I think of France and the holidays I spend there. Monet also used many Irises in his garden at Giverny.
Lovely pics with the raindrops like little diamonds on the flowers. Glad you got some much needed rain. That Texas redbud is a revelation to me: so very pretty!
After a rainfal the garden looks and smells so fresh and new, don’t you think?
Yes, rain is so precious here that I often feel like going outside in it and getting soaked. Sometimes I do. —Pam

I’m SOOOOOOOO glad we finally got some REAL rain! Your irises are gorgeous. I love the way irises smell. Mine aren’t blooming yet.
It can’t be much longer for yours. I have some others that I’m still waiting on too. —Pam

I’m happy to hear you got rain and we got some warm(er) weather, so we are all happy. Your flowers are lovely, beautiful, a feast for the eyes, a reminder of what we have to look forward to here. Thanks for sharing all the pictures.
Thanks, Carol. I’m looking forward to seeing your spring photos too. —Pam

  4. Your garden looks wonderful, and in its fullness, there’s inspiration & hope for those of us who have just started with the same plants – redbud, iris and grape hyacinths.
