Every day is Bloom Day

March 01, 2007

Mexican plum branches and blue sky
With temperatures in the 80s the last couple of days, the garden is practically unfolding before my eyes. If I hadn’t just pruned all my perennials back to the ground, I suspect some of them would be blooming on last year’s growth. As it is, the roses are pushing out new red leaves, the few bulbs I have are all in bloom, and irises are opening daily. If you live north of me, get ready. Spring is coming.

Back garden viewed from the screened porch. The Mexican plum is in full bloom and glows in the morning light.

The first ‘Ice Follies’ daffodil opened yesterday.

‘Avalanche’ is blooming too.

Another ‘Amethyst’ iris has appeared

So glad to see it’s spring somewhere… Having plums, daffodils AND bearded irises bloom simultaneously seems like a really compressed season to a northerner (originally from CT). But it looks like your lawnette hasn’t started to green up yet? Most of our snow is gone here in SW Ohio (except for remnants of the giant piles in parking lots), and the days are noticeably longer… but definitely not spring here yet.
Hi, Renee. Yes, spring is a compressed season in Austin, as are fall and winter for that matter. Only summer gets a full measure here.
The lawnette is beginning to green—not enough to show up in the photo yet. —Pam
