Daffodils, harbingers of spring

February 26, 2007

Fewer this year than last, only three ‘Avalanche’ daffodils have pushed up. Also known as ‘Seven Sisters,’ they are reputed to naturalize in central Texas, but perhaps the extended drought has hurt mine. At any rate, the ones that returned are certainly lovely—a welcome harbinger of spring.

A closeup

A bloom cluster. Looks like this one has about thirteen sisters, not seven.

Grape hyacinths are still going strong.

Remember when the hymenoxys was frozen in ice? The ice storm didn’t do any long-term damage, and the little daisy is blooming nicely.
Ahh, spring.

  1. Ah Spring indeed, it’s almost upon us, I hope. Lovely photos, especially of the seven sisters. Never heard of this daffodil before, they are very pretty.
I got this one from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs on the recommendation of a local daffodil lover. Not all daffs will do well in our heat, but ‘Avalanche’ has always come back for me. —Pam

The detail and clarity of your photos is wonderful. Ahh, spring, indeed! Lucky you! I’m glad the hymenoxys wasn’t damaged. It’s beautiful. Those little daffodils are a sight for sore eyes 🙂 I love the grape hyacynth too.
Hi, Kerri. Thanks for commenting. How long until daffodils are opening in NY? —Pam
