Morning light & heartleaf skullcap

June 01, 2011

The heartleaf skullcap (Scutellaria ovata) is going to seed against a backdrop of chartreuse bamboo muhly (Muhlenbergia dumosa) and burgundy cordyline (Cordyline australis ‘Red Star’).

Tough plants, every one. Heartleaf skullcap is the spring-blooming native. Cordyline is a cold-tender but dry-shade-tolerant subtropical that I replant every year. And bamboo muhly is a cloud-like clumping grass from Arizona that loves full sun or part shade. It got nipped back pretty hard the last two winters, but it survived and is throwing out new stems every day. This combo is growing in the dappled shade of live oaks in my deer-haunted front bed.

  1. Nothing like morning light to make the garden look perfect. I was just looking out the window at ours and wondering if I could convince a friend to come for coffee at 7 am?
