What looks good with Buff Beauty rose

April 27, 2011

My new ‘Buff Beauty’ rose is knocking me out with its luscious color and sweet fragrance. I’m giving it some support with a low, arched trellis made of cattle panel.

Next to it I’ve planted ‘Acapulco Salmon & Pink’ agastache, whose rosy, warm colors should complement ‘Buff Beauty’ nicely. Plus the agastache adds even more fragrance for those who like to run their hands across leaves as they stroll through the garden (me!).

What else is going on in the garden today? The Japanese maple is in leafy, green, sunlit beauty.

And ‘Walker’s Low’ catmint has filled out after its winter cut-back and is blooming prolifically again. It’s a cool, blue-green carpet topped by purple spires.

Speaking of spires, the ‘Chocolate Chip’ manfreda is outdoing itself, letting fly a tremendously tall bloom stalk.

At nearly 5 feet (and seemingly taller since the manfreda is growing in a raised bed), feathered on top with exotic flowers, the bloom stalk offers all-out drama for such a ground-hugging plant.

So what’s happening in your garden today?

Rain yet again. I did get out between showers and pull a few weeds. They slide right out of the ground.

Mostly blues and pinks in my garden. Dianthus, Salvia, Linum, stonecress, and many things on the way.. Used some trimmed pieces of hog panel to hold up my glads. So what does the rose trellis look like? Maybe you austinites have started a trend with galvanized farm products. Panels and tanks. Whats next I wonder? hog feeders? lol

Yes, hog feeders would probably make great planters! I just love galvanized metal in the garden, and lots of Austinites are even using corrugated panels of it for siding on their houses and for fencing. Check out boutique nursery Gardens’ former building on 35th Street. As for the cattle-panel trellis, it’s just a simple arch like this one I used to support a cleome, but bigger. —Pam

The roses are gorgeous and so is the salvias. Wish I had better luck with them.
