Winner of the book giveaway is…

January 28, 2011

On Monday I reviewed Andrea Bellamy’s Sugar Snaps and Strawberries and promised to give a copy of the book to a local reader. To be eligible, one had to 1) live in Austin, 2) leave a comment telling me about your desire to grow edibles, and 3) mention any space limitations you might have.
I received a number of eligible comments on my post and on Facebook, but the one that really struck me was from a newcomer to Austin, who moved into a home with a tiny, shady back yard:
“My family just moved to Austin this summer, and our postage-stamp backyard (and an overload of shade) has us totally stymied about our long-desired vegetable garden. We’re thinking of taking it to the front yard, but just not sure if we can muster the courage to put our efforts on display for the whole neighborhood. But I’d love the book; it would be a huge help. —Melody”
So I’m giving Melody the book in hopes that it will help her figure out how to work some edibles into her life, even if she has to plant them in the front yard (be brave!). Thanks to everyone for your comments, and happy growing and eating!

How nice of you to help a neighbor gardener. If she does plant veggies in the front yard, make sure she doesn’t put a welcome sign anywhere out there. Her neighbors might just help themselves!

  2. Congrats to Melody! And reading that she’s looking to plant a garden in the front yard she should keep an eye out for another new Timber Press book coming out soon…Ivette’s (the Germinatrix) “The Edible Front Yard”
Great point, Loree. In fact, I plan to post about Ivette’s book soon. —Pam

Thanks, Pam! I’m thrilled! And definitely, definitely need the help. I’d love to see some examples of front-yard veggie gardens, if anyone can point me to online images.

  5. Congrats, Melody! I truly hope my book is an inspiration and help to you. Chapter two has some good info on growing in part-shade (yes, it can be done!) And I also echo Loree’s comment: check out “The Edible Front Yard” by Ivette Soler… coming soon!
