Sunset light
September 08, 2008
The tall trees across the street usually keep the sunset light from hitting the front garden. But a couple of evenings ago, while I was taking pictures, low rays from the setting sun managed to break through and bathe the front garden in an orange-pink glow.
It was very pretty for a minute or two, and then it was gone, and the light grew dim.

What great saturated color! This is why photographers shoot early morning and late afternoon when the sun is low!
I don’t have much luck with early morning photos in the front, west-facing garden. But golden afternoon light is dependable there. Still, in the eight years I’ve lived in this house, I’d never caught just this quality of light. Just goes to show, there’s always something new and interesting to discover about an old, familiar place. —Pam
I love how everything looks …. subject matter and lighting .. beautiful shots !
Thanks, Joy! It made me happy to be in the right place at the right time. —Pam
Such yummy color Pam. No wonder you were inspired to take some photos.
How cool is that? I know you’re glad you were able not only to see it but capture it on “film”.
That’s very pretty – you’ll be glad to have those special shots of your house and garden after you’ve moved.
Isn’t it amazing what a difference light makes? You can get a completely different picture and colors are never the same. I try to play with the light some in my photos, but it is a definite art I have yet to even beginning to understand. Wonderful Photos…
Thanks, Randy. Light does indeed make all the difference. —Pam
What is that salvia in the foreground of your first pic? Beautiful pics!
Thanks! That’s Salvia greggii, or Autumn sage. —Pam
Hi Pam, you were super lucky to have that magical light bathe your home and garden and be able to capture that hue. It bodes well for you when luck is on your side!
I felt lucky to see that beautiful light, Frances. —Pam
It almost looks like an old painting with that glow, Pam. May I ask about what time you took the photo? Maybe something similar is happening in my west-facing garden but it must be when I’m not in it. The silhouette of the crepe myrtle looks great against the house!

It was late, Annie, but I don’t remember the time. I thought the sun had already dropped too low for me to get any more good shots, and then suddenly everything lit up again for a few minutes. —Pam
When I’m out taking photographs, I think about the Impressionist painters who painted in the same spot in the same light everyday to catch that perfect moment. I wonder what they would have thought of our cameras today and how those of us who have an artist’s eye can capture the light just so.~~Dee
I bet many of them would have been photographers themselves, don’t you think? —Pam
What a beautiful sight. Your gardens are so lovely, I know you are going to miss them. (I will!) But I can’t wait to see what you will create next!
Thanks for your sweet sentiment, Linda. I expect I will miss the garden, but I hope the new house surpasses this one, wonderful home though it’s been. —Pam
Gorgeous evening color! I can’t seem to get that timing right, but you nailed it!
Brenda
Thanks, Brenda! —Pam
What gorgeous shots. They are perfect. You probably won’t be able to get another shot like that. Made to order for your scrapbook. It is so beautiful–your front garden & the house. I know you will miss both.
Thanks, Lola. It was good timing for a goodbye image, wasn’t it? —Pam
Beautiful — you have a lovely home. 🙂
Many thanks, Nancy. —Pam
The evening light is gorgeous. What do you feed those salvia for such prolonged bloom?
I’m terribly lazy about feeding or adding compost, Jenny. I’ve never fed these since I planted them about 7 years ago. But I do prune them regularly, which is what does the trick. —Pam
oooooo, aaaaaaaaah…
I love your beautiful garden, in any light…
Such an inspiration you are!
It looks beautiful Pam! Gail
Just front page magazine beautiful!
Perfect!Don’t you just love when that happens?
The light at sunset is my favorite time to take photos. I just love that time of day, with its halcyon wash of light.
